Description

What is ARYMO ER (MORPHINE SULFATE)?

ARYMO ER (morphine sulfate) extended-release tablets are for oral use and contain morphine sulfate, an opioid agonist.

Each tablet contains the following inactive ingredients common to all strengths: polyethylene oxide 400,000, butylated hydroxytoluene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol 3350, talc, and titanium dioxide.

The tablet strengths describe the amount of morphine per tablet as the pentahydrated sulfate salt (morphine sulfate).

The 15 mg tablets also contain: FD&C Blue No. 2 and ferric oxide yellow.

The 30 mg tablets also contain: ferric oxide red, FD&C Blue No. 2, and ferrosoferric oxide.

The 60 mg tablets also contain: ferric oxide yellow, and ferric oxide red.

ARYMO ER (MORPHINE SULFATE) is an odorless, white crystalline solid with a bitter taste. It has a solubility of 1 in 21 parts of water and 1 in 1000 parts of alcohol, and practically insoluble in chloroform or ether. The octanol:water partition coefficient of morphine is 1.42 at physiologic pH and the pKa is 7.9 for the tertiary nitrogen (mostly ionized at pH 7.4).

How to use ARYMO ER (MORPHINE SULFATE)?

Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking morphine and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take ARYMO ER (MORPHINE SULFATE) on a regular schedule as directed by your doctor, not as needed for sudden (breakthrough) pain. Take it by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually 2 or 3 times daily (every 8 or 12 hours). You may take this drug with or without food. If you have nausea, it may help to take this drug with food. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about other ways to decrease nausea (such as lying down for 1 to 2 hours with as little head movement as possible).

Swallow the tablets whole. Do not break, crush, chew, or dissolve the tablet. Doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of morphine overdose.

Do not pre-soak, lick, or wet the tablet before placing it in your mouth, since the tablet may swell and become sticky when wet. This could make the tablet difficult to swallow, which may lead to choking or the tablet getting stuck in your throat. If your dose is for more than one tablet, you should take one tablet at a time. Take each tablet with enough water to make sure you completely swallow it right after placing it in your mouth.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not increase your dose or take this drug more often or for longer than prescribed, because your risk of side effects may increase. Properly stop the medication when so directed.

Before you start taking ARYMO ER (MORPHINE SULFATE), ask your doctor or pharmacist if you should stop or change how you use your other opioid medication(s). Other pain relievers (such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen) may also be prescribed. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about using morphine safely with other drugs.

If you suddenly stop using this medication, you may have withdrawal symptoms (such as restlessness, watering eyes, runny nose, nausea, sweating, muscle aches). To help prevent withdrawal, your doctor may lower your dose slowly. Withdrawal is more likely if you have used morphine for a long time or in high doses. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if you have withdrawal.

When ARYMO ER (MORPHINE SULFATE) is used for a long time, it may not work as well. Talk with your doctor if this medication stops working well.

Though it helps many people, this medication may sometimes cause addiction. This risk may be higher if you have a substance use disorder (such as overuse of or addiction to drugs/alcohol). Take this medication exactly as prescribed to lower the risk of addiction. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Side Effects of ARYMO ER

Nausea, vomiting, constipation, sweating, lightheadedness, dizziness, or drowsiness may occur. Some of these side effects may decrease after you have been using this medication for a while. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

To prevent constipation, eat a diet adequate in fiber, drink plenty of water, and exercise. Ask your pharmacist for help in selecting a laxative (such as a stimulant type with stool softener).

To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: mental/mood changes (such as agitation, confusion, hallucinations), stomach/abdominal pain, difficulty urinating, difficulty swallowing this medication, signs of your adrenal glands not working well (such as loss of appetite, unusual tiredness, weight loss).

Get medical help right away if you have any very serious side effects, including: fainting, seizure, slow/shallow breathing, severe drowsiness/difficulty waking up.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
